Case study

Pool clean after strong winds

A few days of strong wind left this pool's floor, steps and ledge covered in leaves. The water itself was fine. Left there, the leaves wouldn't have stayed harmless for long.

The problem

This is a bright, modern pool with a pale interior and glass fencing, which means every leaf shows. After the wind, leaves were scattered across the floor, the steps and the ledge.

Leaves are more than a looks problem. As they break down they use up chlorine, can stain a pale interior and end up clogging the skimmer and pump baskets.

What I did

  1. 1Netted the leaves off the surface and lifted the heavier ones off the floor.
  2. 2Brushed the steps and ledge and vacuumed the floor.
  3. 3Emptied the skimmer and pump baskets.
  4. 4Tested the water and adjusted the chemistry where needed.

The result

A clean floor, clear steps and water ready to swim in.

What to do after a windy day

Get the leaves out within a day or two, before they sink and start breaking down. Empty the skimmer basket, run the pump and check the chlorine. If the pool goes green or cloudy afterwards, the chlorine has run out and it needs a proper treatment.
