Why Central Coast pools turn green in spring

It is the same story every September. The pump timer was wound back over winter, the leaves from the gums and the frangipani kept falling, a few big rain events diluted the chlorine to nothing, and the first warm week of spring switched the algae on. On the coast the salt air, wind-blown sand and leaf load make it worse than it would be inland.

A green pool is not a lost pool. It is a chemistry problem with a filtration problem on top, and both are fixable in the water. You do not need to drain it, and you should not, because a high water table around Terrigal, Avoca and the Peninsula can lift or crack an empty shell.

How I bring a green pool back

Professional-grade treatment, not a trolley of retail chemicals. Three stages, with the water tested at each one.

Stage 1

Test and assess

Full water test on site: chlorine, pH, alkalinity, stabiliser, salt and phosphates. I check the pump, filter and chlorinator, because a dead cell or a blocked filter is usually why the pool went green in the first place. You get a quote before anything goes in the water.

Stage 2

Shock, kill and drop

The pH is corrected first so the chlorine actually works, then a heavy shock dose and a professional algaecide kill the bloom. A flocculant binds the dead algae and drops it to the floor overnight instead of leaving it suspended in the water.

Stage 3

Vacuum to waste and rebalance

The settled algae is vacuumed straight to waste so it never goes through your filter. Then the filter is cleaned or backwashed, the water is balanced, and I re-test before I tell you it is safe to swim. A photo report comes with every visit.

Your filter

A sand filter can be backwashed between visits. A cartridge filter needs cleaning by hand, so heavy jobs on cartridge systems take a little longer.
Whether the equipment works

If the chlorinator cell or pump is the reason the pool went green, treating the water alone will not hold. I tell you straight if a repair is needed and quote it separately.
Pump run time

During recovery the pump runs around the clock. Leaving it on is the single biggest thing you can do to speed the job up.

How long does it take to clear a green pool?

Every green pool is different. It depends on the size of the pool, how long it has been green, the filter type and what the water test shows on the day. After the first visit I will give you a realistic estimate for your pool, and I keep coming back until it is clear and balanced.

Do I need to drain my pool?

Almost never. Draining a pool on the Central Coast wastes tens of thousands of litres, can damage the shell if the water table is high, and is rarely necessary. Algae is treated in the water with a shock dose, an algaecide and a flocculant, then vacuumed to waste.

Is it safe to swim while the pool is being treated?

No. Chlorine is run very high during a shock treatment and the water is cloudy, so nobody swims until I have tested it and confirmed the chlorine, pH and clarity are back in the safe range.

Why did my pool turn green over winter?

The usual Central Coast story: the pump run time was cut back over winter, leaves and rain kept coming, chlorine dropped to zero and the first warm week of spring gave the algae everything it needed. A pool can go from cloudy to green in a couple of days once the water warms up.

Will it turn green again?

Not if the cause is fixed. Once the pool is clear I check the filter, chlorinator and pump run times, balance the water properly and tell you exactly what let it slip. A regular Premium Full Service or Test and Balance visit keeps it that way through summer.

What does green pool recovery cost?

It depends on the size of the pool and how far gone it is, so I quote after the first water test rather than guessing over the phone. You get a clear price before any treatment starts, with no surprise extras.
